amazing artist

this whimsical, luscious and unique art is created by my friend Jenny Keith. She is one young and talented girl from Canada. She is currently having a show here in NYC at the Prince George Gallery on 27th Street(you must go!). You can also view her work here.
Jenny and I met one random night out in NYC(2008), got to chatting about art and the business of showing your art. She invited me to her show at the time and because I went and stayed intouch, she helped me take the necessary steps in showing my own art. Thanks Jenny!!

Abstract Art

I generally don't have much narrative behind alot of my work and when asked about it, I tend to go on and on and around in circles. I came across this(probably another blog) and it pretty much  sums it all up—atleast to me.

A cluster of theoretical ideas lies behind abstract art. The idea of art for art's sake—that art should be purely about the creation of beautiful effects. The idea that art can or should be like music – that just as music is patterns of sound, art's effects should be created by pure patterns of form, colour and line. The idea, derived from the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, that the highest form of beauty lies not in the forms of the real world but in geometry. The idea that abstract art, to the extent that it does not represent the material world, can be seen to represent the spiritual. In general abstract art is seen as carrying a moral dimension, in that it can be seen to stand for virtues such as order, purity, simplicity and spirituality.

More word boards

art boards

although i spend my summer days teaching arts and crafts to campers-i feel the need to be creating for myself...this summer we've gotten our hands on some scrap plywood boards about 28" x 28".
They've got torn newspaper decoupaged in the background and plenty of paint-a fun experiment...
got the whole craft department in on it...

skinny delish!

Have you tried this?
"Skinnygirl" margarita?? Two of my fave friends were over the other evening for cocktails on our terrace(happened to be a balmy summer eve in NYC) and one of them brought this delightfully tasty and very light on calories cocktail in a bottle(screw top and all-just pour over ICE!!)
Quick-go get some yum-TGIF!

seeing red

A while back I started this large canvas-this first layer or underpainting is clearly what must have been an emotional and aggressive day for me. There are really interesting bits of newspaper print, such as images of superhero comics and an old new york times crossword puzzle finished by my dad adhered to the canvas.
This is the finished canvas and I'm very pleased with it. I am so glad that I have the image above to remind me of what's lurking behind the surface...when you look closely, you can see the odd bits of newspaper, textured drips and scrawled writing.

my art

This is too exciting! I was commissioned about a year ago to paint these panels for a client and they are finally finished and hanging in the master bedroom of their new home. They look so dramatic and what's even more gratifying-my clients are thrilled!

summer toes

Wow it's been a while since I've blogged-anyhow, couldn't resist posting my fab grassy green toes for summer(usually a dark pinkish purple this time of year). Aside from my freakishly long toes(yikes!) still think they look pretty fun and fresh...

wrapped stick
It has been forever since i last posted...not sure if blogging is my thing(atleast regularly)?
had a ton going on(not necessarily creative-but important to me). my kids school was finishing up, bringing with it alot of parental obligations-i was readying one for summer camp away for the first time(stressful), as well as readying myself and my younger one for day camp(i teach art at camp for summer).
today is the first day and this wrapped stick(apologies-i have no idea where i came across this image, but love it!) seems like such a cool project for some of my goups. so many of the projects are these junky kits that you order from catalogs, that it's so nice to come across interesting and creative looking objects
that you can DIY.

this book by todd oldham is chock full of great projects for kids and definitely my fave and go to book for ideas this summer at camp...the kids will really love them and be challenged creatively as well...off to camp!

great books

These are great books that I've either finished or pick up when I can grab a few moments here and there. As an artist, I can't read or see enough about other artists and their experiences. I highly recommend each, they are insightful and inspiring...

self portrait-oil stick on paper

this actually started out as a more realistic self portrait and i wasn't thrilled, so i just let myself go and it became this. i'm thinking of adding some words and thoughts around the perimeter-like a frame in ink or graphite...
happy weekend!

Well-I've been busy experimenting with encaustic wax and it's been interesting. Can't decide if I like it or not? The wax has a mind of it's own and haven't quite gotten the hang of manipulating it. here is a sample of a work in progress-has an edgy and dramatic feel...
